Paul and I are raising our kids to be bilingual in English and Spanish, so Paul speaks only in Spanish to them. Thus far, Olivia doesn't really say anything in Spanish since she hears English more. She can say 'hola,' but hasn't said it in a very long time. She also says mama with a Spanish accent (the accent being at the end of the word instead of the beginning) because that's how she hears Paul say it. Although she doesn't say much in Spanish yet, she understands it very well. Since she can understand it, we know the words will come sooner or later.
One night as Paul was getting Olivia ready for bed, he decided to work with her on saying Spanish words. Before I share their conversation, let me fill you in on what the following Spanish words/phrases mean.
-Puedes decir = Can you say
-Sí = yes
-Hola = hello
-Gracias = thank you
-Beso = kiss
Paul: "¿Puedes decir 'sí?'"
Olivia: "She."
Paul: "¿Puedes decir 'hola?'"
Olivia mumbles something that sounds like: "Hall."
Paul: "¿Puedes decir 'gracias?'"
Olivia: "Thank you." (At least she can translate from Spanish to English, right?)
Paul: "¿Puedes decir 'beso?'"
Olivia: "Muah!"
We cracked up when she responded to those last two. Paul obviously has some work to do!
